What's New?
May 9, 2016
Our newest exhibit was launched April 24th and was well received by the community. The open-themed exhibit consists of poetry and short stories, sculptures, acrylic and oil paintings, photography, pastel paintings, water-colour and umbrellas painted on commission. The new exhibit is available for viewing from now until mid-fall during the Information Center's regular hours.
The second phase of the Mural Project has also begun. There was a delay due to water damage after the wet spring. Repairs have been made allowing the project to proceed. Photos can be seen by following Community Events with a sub-page called: Mural Project.

Our next exhibit takes place at the Gallery April 24th, in the afternoon!
Consider marking this date on your calendar and drop by for a visit!
Our next exhibit will be April 24th. The artists chose an open theme for this exhibit. There are rumours that the umbrellas are back! These were very popular at a previous spring exhibit. There are more exciting things happening. Check back for more information.

The mural project ran into a snag with the wet spring weather. The wall that was to receive the large mural scene has been subjected to a some moisture. Once repairs have been made and leaks have been secured, this portion of the project will proceed. In the meantime, the wooden panels ordered for the second portion of the project have arrived. The artists participating in this project will begin their work on the scenes depicting the remaining sectors of the municipality not represented in the first mural. Each panel will be gessoed to prevent warping then, the scenes will be applied using acrylic paints. Each representative scene has been selected by the mural committee but the design and artistic elements used in the paintings will be at each artist's discretion.

The municipality of West Nipissing installs large flower pots each summer. Last year, a number of our artists participated in painting those Flower pots with various fun scenes. Recently, the group got together to prepare the surfaces of the next lot of pots to be painted in anticipation of summer! Each pot was primed with an undercoating ready to receive designs and of course, the municipal logo, « Joie de vivre ». The pots are slated for completion before the end of May. Interested in this activity? Any members wishing to participate may contact Raymonde or Lana for details.

Four members of the mural group met today to make final decisions concerning materials that will be needed and to begin establishing a preliminary sketch on the wall. You can view the sketch and read about the progress by clicking above on

February 25, 2016You can see a general visual plan as to what is to come under Community Events > Mural Project. Research has begun to locate the 18 x 24 panels that will be used to depict points of interest from each of the communities and will be installed on the mural wall.
February 21, 2016Today, members of the mural committee met for lunch to discuss the next stage of the mural. They also met with Lynn Duhaime to discuss a decision to paint a large background scene of the Sturgeon River based on a reference photo by Michel Labelle of River Valley. The group will subsequently install ten 18 x 24 panels depicting scenes from each of the five communities to be represented in Phase 2 of the mural.
January 28, 2016The next phase of the Mural Project will soon begin in the Sports Complex in Sturgeon Falls. The process began with discussion and reviewing reference photos collected from each of the communities of the municipality of West Nipissing: Sturgeon Falls, Crystal Falls, Field, Desaulniers and River Valley. The wall that will receive the mural has been primed and readied. The Mural Committee has met a number of times to determine their focus and plan of action beginning with sketching of various landmarks from the above designated communities of West Nipissing. The intent of the artists is to create a mural that will reflect the charm and natural appeal of this region. As the project evolves, visit this website often to learn more about the process and view photos of the work at this website under: More...Community Events...Mural Project.

The MURAL is now at the half-way point...
The mural project undertaken by the Gallery has reached its half-way point to completion. The municipality of West Nipissing is comprised of a number of smaller communities, each of which will be represented pictorially in the mural project. As of Friday November 27th, 2015 the first section of the large mural located in the Sports Complex in Sturgeon Falls is complete with depictions from Monetville, Lavigne, Kipling, Verner and Cache Bay. The subsequent section of mural is scheduled to begin mid-January 2016 and will also be located in the Sports Complex. The mural will reflect the remaining communities within West Nipissing including River Valley, Desaulniers, Field, Crystal Falls and Sturgeon Falls. A constant at each exhibit is the draw for a unique and original art piece. The winner of the draw during the Rivers and Lakes Exhibit is Gladys Gascon. She is pictured here on the left accepting the unique painting from Angèle Giroux, a member of the Gallery. This striking painting by the renowned artist Jack Lockhart was donated by Vera Charles. It consists of a water landscape scene underpainted first with a modeling agent to create a relief which is then painted with a metallic acrylic paint.

The launch of the Gallery's current exhibit titled 'Rivers and Lakes' took place Sunday October 25th on a bright, sunny autumn day. The Gallery was transformed into a sculptor's studio this afternoon under the capable and creative hands of Gordon Desveaux. Mr. Desveaux presented a workshop to introduce participants to basic techniques in sculpting soapstone. The participants were guided through the process from rough stone to a shaped and polished stone. Each stone had a hole drilled through it, ready to receive a chain or rope to become a pendant. The shaping of the soapstone was achieved with coarse sandpaper graduating to successively finer grits until the final polish with a finer grit paper and water. The entire process required plenty of rubbing and patience! The participants left pleased with their final product and appreciative of the relaxing process. There was ample opportunity to enjoy the artful process together. Participants also left with a deeper understanding and appreciation of the process Mr. Desveaux goes through in producing his large soapstone sculptures. These may be viewed in the Gallery during the Information Center's hours of operation, Monday through Friday between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm.

Umbrellas get money pouring in to art gallery
It was a great turnout for Expressions! West Nipissing Art Gallery’s
Green with Envy exhibit opening on May 4.
By Allison Roy
Tribune, May 21, 2014
The Expressions! West Nipissing Art Gallery kicked off their season with a very successful event on May 4, as nearly 100 people turned out for the launch of their new Green with Envy exhibit at the West Nipissing Information Centre.
As part of the event, gallery members sold approximately 68 hand-painted umbrellas, at around $30 each, as a fundraiser for future gallery projects.
“[It] went far beyond our expectations, we were really pleased about that,” raved Lauraine Laframboise, gallery member, regarding the umbrella sales. Prior to the event, members attended workshops and created each unique piece with acrylic paint.
“People were really interested in purchasing them,” Laframboise said. “Maybe they liked the fact that they were handmade and that it’s a one-of-a-kind. [There was just a real exuberance about it, they found them really attractive and when you walked into the gallery, the umbrellas were on display on the one wall.”
The event kicked off at 11:30 a.m. with opening words from president Paulynne Charron, and lasted until about 3:30 p.m. According to Laframboise, the day attracted a lot of new people to the gallery.
“It was just all really well received (…), we were really appreciative of everybody who supported the gallery and the umbrella project because that was kind of a new endeavor for us,” she enthused. “We weren’t sure how it would be received.”
She added that it will be neat to see people walking down the street on a rainy day using their umbrellas.
For those who did not have the opportunity to purchase one, it was noted that more umbrellas will be available after June 9.
“It was a really positive project, both ways, I think within the community, because (…) now the umbrellas will be out there, and for the members too, it gave a chance to connect a little more, in a more tactile way with the community,” Laframboise shared.

The Gallery was Green with Envy at the wonderful community support! The vernissage was once again, a big success thanks to the many people who attended!
The artists were further thrilled at the interest in their hand-painted umbrellas. These were quickly sold out but a number of orders were taken on commission.
In addition, there were many positive remarks about the current work on exhibit in the Gallery. It's not too late to see the exhibit. You can visit the Gallery during the Information Center's operating hours. (The Gallery is upstairs. Elevator service is available.)

A few well-chosen words from the Gallery's President, Paulyne Charron:
Today, on behalf of the artists present, I chose to speak to you of the color green, the most restful color for the human eye.
Green takes up more space in the spectrum visible to the human eye and it is the dominant color in nature and is a natural choice in interior design.
Green is an emotionally positive color. Green promotes a love of nature, and a love of family, friends, pets and the home. It is the color of the garden lover, the home lover and the good host.
Green is a safe color, if you don't know what color to use anywhere, use green. It symbolizes the master healer and the life force. It often symbolizes money. It was believed green was healing for the eyes. Egyptians wore green eyeliner. Green eye-shades are often still used. Raw green foods are good for good health. Friday is the day of green.
Green jade is a sacred stone in Asia. Balance, a sense of order and energy are found in the color green. It is associated with harmony, renewal, growth and hope. Green also stands for rebirth, common in the spring when plants come back to life after the cold winter months. Thus, the name of today’s exhibit “Green with Envy”.
Green is the color associated with the Heart Chakra. Expressions artists offer you a small piece of their hearts today.
We hope you enjoy your visit to our gallery.

Just in time for April showers, Expressions! West Nipissing Art Gallery will be selling hand-painted umbrellas on May 4 as part of their exhibit themed Green with Envy. Designed and painted by artists from the gallery, the umbrellas will be available to purchase at the May 4 opening.
Member Lauraine Laframboise explains this is a first for the gallery, and each one-of-a-kind piece will be selling between $25 and $30 as a fundraiser for gallery projects.
“Actually it was brought to the group by Paulynne Charron, [gallery president], and I think she had seen something similar being done by another gallery and had thought it would be a good idea for us to use as a fundraiser,” Laframboise recalls...To read more, click here

Expressions! launches pair of shows
May is here and everyone has started waking up and enjoying the sunshine. Getting out of the house is instinct at this point as spring cleaning gets our blood pumping and everyone starts reclaiming their homes, lives and getting active with their artistic practice.
There are all sorts of ways to get your creative energies moving including collaborative art creation events, workshops, art talks as well as attending opening receptions for shows. There are a multitude of art openings this coming weekend and I want to celebrate just a few together in the hopes that you get out there and see them.
The Northern Ontario Art Association is presenting its 56th Annual touring exhibition at Discovery North Bay from May 4 to May 31. Their official opening reception is not until May 17 as part of the Downtown Gallery Hop but you can go check out all the paintings, prints and mixed media works starting this weekend. Jurors for the exhibition are local art experts Arlie Hoffman and David Carlin. This promises to be a sensational exhibition with artists from all across Northern Ontario participating.
The Expressions! West Nipissing Art Gallery is launching two art exhibitions at their gallery space located in the West Nipissing Tourist Information Center in Sturgeon Falls this Sunday, May 5th from 1 to 3:30 p.m.
“Inspirations” opens in the Main Gallery and “expressing personal experience” opens in the Open-Balcony. Both exhibitions will be showcasing the talents of local and regional artists working in all forms of art creation. The gallery is also celebrating a number of new members adding these new talents to the group’s already impressive roster of artists. These exhibitions are presented in collaboration with the Alliance Centre – “Mental Health for All” and will be running for the whole summer as the primary art show for the season. All are welcome to attend, chat about projects and catch a glimpse of some great locally created artwork.

West Nipissing's arts community celebrated 10 years on Oct. 28.
Warm up with hot arts talk
COLUMN – Nipissing District’s cold weather makes for great gatherings with arts and culture being the hot conversations keeping everyone as warm as possible. It is a time for sharing of experiences and celebrations of friendship and good will. Staying warm with a hot cup of coffee while discussing the past year’s arts activities or looking towards what the next year will bring sounds like a great way to stay warm. We all need to stick together as it gets colder – communication is a critical component to a healthy arts industry.
This past Sunday one of the warmest arts gatherings took place in Sturgeon Falls at La Galerie d’arts de Nipissing Ouest Expressions! Dozens of artists and members gathered together to celebrate 10 years of operations at the gallery and West Nipissing knows how to have an art party! With an exhibition of 25 members as well as collaborative sculpture creations, poetry readings, music and a huge cake, the Expressions team are great hosts. They also sported their spiffy new membership pins that show off the gallery’s new logo, which was designed by Simone Desormiers, representing the group’s community focus. Networking events like this one are the best way for artists to meet and communicate what each other are doing and how their arts practices are moving forward. Expressions has consistently improved itself over the years and many local artists are wondering what great things are to come in the next 10 years of activity.
Another hot event is the Near North Mobile Media Lab’s COLD SWEAT taking place at the Raven and Republic in North Bay on Thursday, Nov. 1. Warm up with the hottest 60s pop, R&B and Motown inspired classics and mash-ups! DJs Holly GoLightly and Donna Unicourt are ready to show you a good time and the friendly Raven staff can recommend the best specialty craft beers, spirits and wines off the menu. The doors open at 10 p.m. with a small cover. For more information please visit: www.n2m2l.ca or look them up on Facebook.
You can burn up the dance floor showing off your hot skills or chill on the sideline with a cool conversation that will warm your heart. When you are out celebrating arts and culture in this cold weather, make sure to dress warm and stay chill. We all need more hot celebrations and cool conversations with a warm fire and a cold… these puns out of control.
Arts column by Clayton Windatt, a keen observer of the local arts scene and is the executive director of the White Water Gallery.

Art sleuths make history

STURGEON FALLS — Marking a milestone of visual arts turned into detective work for a group of volunteers, and what they discovered will be revealed on the weekend.
Expressions West Nipissing Art Gallery has reached its 10th anniversary as an artist-run, not-for-profit art centre. The gallery is celebrating with its largest exhibit featuring more than 50 artists including some who have been involved since the doors opened.
Being contacted for the show A Decade of Colours even motivated former members to become involved in the centre again, said Lauraine Laframboise, who heads the gallery's publicity committee.
“It tells us that the gallery is important to them,” she said.
She said the search for original members was part of the fun for the group that aims to develop confidence in local artists through feedback and encouragement.
Georgette Primeau is one of the original members of Expressions and said the courses and input from other artists created a camaraderie that kept her involved over the years.
“It's a real great group of new friends I would have never have known before,” she said.
Expressions is making more connections with other galleries as venues for its members at a time when provincial granting programs and artist groups are following through with outreach to Northern Ontario.
Expressions is using the anniversary to introduce literary readings by authors and poets, and to unveil its new logo designed by Simone Desormiers connecting the West Nipissing Joie de Vivre campaign to build a stronger connection to the community and make more people aware of the gallery.
Louisette Tousignant designed the anniversary theme of a pine tree with its strong roots of past members and branches of current ones who help promote the arts in West Nipissing.
The gallery is located at the West Nipissing Information Centre. A Decade of Colours opens Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. and continues until the spring.

West Nipissing Art Gallery kicks off its 10th anniversary celebration on Sunday, Oct. 28 from noon to 5 pm, inviting everyone to come out and see works by current and former members and attend a book launch by a Northern Ontario author.
The gallery is located inside the WN Information Centre on Front Street.
“We’ve asked the former members to participate in the celebrations as well,” says Raymonde Gaudette, gallery secretary, adding they have contacted about 80 members and 35 are contributing a work of art to the event.
“There will be a tree in the lobby as we come in and the tree is featuring metallic leaves and the metallic leaves will be inscribed with the names of all participating artists, past and present,” she describes.
The tree will feature different coloured leaves, with red for the founding members, green, silver and copper for former members and the gold leaves representing the current members.
“We celebrated the fifth anniversary because we didn’t think that we’d go any further and then all of a sudden, the gallery took some momentum and we’re very happy that it lasted ten years,” Gaudette enthuses.
During the celebration, gallery president Paulyne Charron and member and historian Annette Sturgeon will be making a presentation about the history of the gallery.
“We’re trying to get a guest speaker, we’re trying to get Clermont Duval from Mattawa. He’s an author and he’s launching a new book with about 300 paintings,” she says.
There will also be an exciting unveiling at the event, as Gaudette says they will be launching their brand new logo.
“We changed it because we wanted to be considered in the community because we are a community gallery and we’re also very intertwined with the municipality because they’ve been supporting us with the venue upstairs in the tourist information centre on Front St.”
She adds the new logo, which was designed by Simone Desormiers, a current member, will better represent the group and its community focus.
“We want the people to be more aware of our community gallery and I think the new logo will help with that,” she states. “We will also distribute pins [and] current members will be given a pin depicting the new logo.”
“We would really appreciate for the community to visit the opening of this special exhibit,” urges Gaudette.
She says the gallery is doing well they have been recruiting new members.
“With the former members’ responses, well we’re all encouraged. Everybody is surprised in a way that it lasted 10 years and that we’re still very active,” Gaudette shares.
Expressions! West Nipissing Art Gallery was formed in 2002 after 11 founding members formed the first executive. Although the gallery was only launched in November, members had been working since May or June to get things up and running.

Preparing for our next exhibit: MAY 1, 2011
The Gallery's artists have been contemplating a new theme which will be unveiled at the May exhibit. The title of the theme in French is Éclosion, in english: Eclosion. This word carries the same basic meaning in both languages: the emergence of an insect from its pupal case, or the hatching of a
larva from an egg. The term originates from the French verb: éclore...to open.
But the term goes far beyond this simple definition and has been used to refer to transformation; the miracle of metamorphosis; the movement from one stage of life to another.
The word is often coupled with other words to infer change within that context. Some examples are: cultural eclosion...the cultural awakening that occurs throughout history and indeed which we are experiencing in our present world. Our fast-paced culture promotes frequent movement and re-location...
Eclosion...emergence from concealment...
Narrative eclosion...transformation or change that occurs in our world sometimes in direct response to literary works or change in the world that is reflected in literary works. A number of great literary authors come to mind such as the French Victor Hugo Alexandre Dumas, George Sand, Saint-Exupery to name but a few and English authors such as Shakespeare, Dickens, Blake, Lord Byron, Mary Shelley... Today's narrative eclosion has exploded with the emergence of our techno-world...blogs, websites, Facebook, Twitter...
Eclosion brings to mind the monarch butterfly's dramatic metamorphosis; leatherback turtles with their yolkless eggs hatching... The eclosion rhythm...cycle of life...cycle of the universe. These are affected by everything we do...global warming, age and aging...and so much more...
Eclosion...a process of change...
It will be exciting to see how this theme is interpreted by various artists. Be sure to mark our next exhibit's opening day on your calendar! May 1, 2011 in the Gallery.

November 11, 2010
Representatives from the Arts Council came to visit the Gallery.
The following report was taken from the minutes of November 25th:
On November 11, via Clayton Wyndatt, « Expressions » Gallery member and director of the « Whitewater Gallery » in North Bay, P. Charron, L. Laframboise and R. Gaudette met with:
Kristian Clarke, CARFAC Ontario, http://www.carfacontario.ca,
Emma Quin, Ontario Crafts Council, http://www.craft.on.ca
Lisa Wöhrie (replaced by: Caitlyn Ewes), Ontario Arts Council, http://www.arts.on.ca
Clayton Wyndatt, director of White Water Gallery, [email protected] and Janet Bourgeau, North Bay Art Association, [email protected] were also present.
Questions asked and topics discussed:
Which direction should the West Nipissing Art Gallery « Expression » take as a group?
Two possibilities:
a) Non-profit gallery (not incorporated), where paintings are exhibited only. In order to sell paintings, members would need to work with other organizations and participate in community activities (for example, rent a table or location in the annual November Craft Show).
b) Gallery is incorporated: artists would be allowed to sell their paintings and remit a percentage of their sales (this is how the Gallery currently operates).
How can we determine which direction would be most beneficial and fitting for us ?
A « compass grant » is given to groups who require assistance in determining their direction. In this instance, a consultant is available to enable more effective completion of applications. The above-mentioned resource personnel is more than willing to help us out. Also on hand is Donna Maitland (Bilingual), Program Manager, Northern Trillium Foundation.
Téléphone :1.866.474.0707 ou 705.474.0707

[email protected]
Where can we seek financial assistance for the Gallery?
The following organizations were mentioned:
Art Nord, Trillium, OAC (Ontario Arts Council)/CAO (Conseil des Arts de l’Ontario) and
Northern Ontario Arts Heritage Fund
Why would we ask for money?
For the artist : on a personal basis, these grants would help to defray expenses to an artist who would want to have an Art exhibit of his/her paintings in another Gallery.
For the Gallery : money given to Gallery to pay a feature (local or out of the region) artist that exhibits in this Gallery for a given time.
Additional important info
It is strongly suggested that we make contact with other galleries and other districts to share info and expertise. We need to create a network of galleries, artists and artisans from near and far to share in exhibits, workshops, education and other diverse info. For example, we need to continue to participate in community events such as « la St Jean » in June; the Fiddle Festival in August or help create the Art Exhibit at the Sturgeon Falls Museum scheduled for November.
On November 11, Paulyne Charron started this networking of artists by attending a meeting of artists in North Bay. Her presence at this meeting prompted Kristian Clarke, Director of CARFAC (Association of Professional Visual and Media Artists) to invite members present to visit our gallery in Sturgeon Falls. Paulyne mentioned that under discussion, the possibility of having a Gallery tour was proposed where artists from various galleries all around the region could travel together (by rented bus coach to visit one another's art venues.
Important : CARFAC has all rates pertaining to payments of workshops, artists, etc. The main focus of all these organizations is to assure that artists are being paid for their work.

New Exhibit at Expressions Art Gallery

New Exhibit at Expressions Art Gallery
Article by Chris Montanini for the TRIBUNE
It's only been a few weeks since Expressions! West Nipissing Art Gallery's latest exhibit opened, but artist John Guenther was already working on his next piece inside the gallery on Friday, April 30.
Guenther was one of the artists behind the gallery's puzzle painting, which is on display at their location at 30 Front Street.
Around 15 West Nipissing artists were given a section of the painting to create, without knowing exactly what the finished product was.
"Sometimes it flows and sometimes there's a harsh stop," Guenther said about the exercise, which turned out to be a bouquet of tulips.
"I'd call it, Picasso tulips," he continued with a laugh.
Lauraine Laframboise, one of the members of the exhibit, said the opening drew in close to 100 people and featured over 20 artists in the area.
"We found that people took the time to linger and chat with the artists," she said. "They were a little more relaxed than before."
Laframboise explained one of the main goals of the gallery is to try and create a little bit more exposure in West Nipissing where their entire membership resides. She added the exhibits, which include a variety of art ranging from oil paintings to poetry, are starting to garner more interest from the public. "The gallery is unique because it includes all local artists," she said. "The members have a lot of interest in keeping it going."
some have begun joining Guenther at the gallery on Fridays to paint and critique art, something that the Monetville native started when he joined Expressions! a year ago.
"I enjoyed watching the ladies (the gallery's executive) have meetings," he said. "But I thought ...there's more to it than having meetings about art."
Although it took a while, Guenther said he eventually got what he wanted...a place to paint with other artists.
"I'm not finished yet," he said. "I still want people to know Expressions! exists."
"I like to teach and learn at the same time. I can't do either if I'm by myself."
